چکیده

Abstract We examined Henslow’s Sparrow (Centronyx henslowii) response to prescribed fire at 32 grasslands Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge in southeastern Indiana from 1999 2009. burned the spring between and 2007 monitored Sparrows for up 4 yr after treatment. used linear mixed models analyze our data. counts were correlated with time since grassland size. The estimated changes mean density relative pre-burn densities ?0.19, 1.15, 0.74, ?0.68 birds ha?1 1–4 breeding seasons a burn, respectively. found that preferred larger both during first season fire, when vegetation was presumed possess less litter structural density, fourth be more ideal composition, but smaller interim. Thus, size shapes magnitude of population populations experiencing greater amplitude changes. Larger might provide habitat diversity following attenuating change. On average, responded positively network cumulative net change highest three burn suggesting maintaining this frequency would beneficial abundance.

Grassland Management With Prescribed Fire

This circular provides an overview of the use of fire in grassland management. It describes the history and importance of fire in the grassland ecosystem, how plants respond to fire, and the uses and potential benefits of prescribed fire. It also summarizes fire planning and legal and safety considerations. And finally, it provides guidance on some special uses of fire. when burning conditions ...

Quantifying the multi-scale response of avifauna to prescribed fire experiments in the southwest United States.

Landscape-scale disturbance events, including ecological restoration and fuel reduction activities, can modify habitat and affect relationships between species and their environment. To reduce the risk of uncharacteristic stand-replacing fires in the southwestern United States, land managers are implementing restoration and fuels treatments (e.g., mechanical thinning, prescribed fire) in progre...

Response of Deeproot Sedge (Cyperus entrerianus) to Herbicide and Prescribed Fire in Texas Coastal Prairie

Introduced accidentally from South America, deeproot sedge is rapidly expanding in a variety of habitats throughout the southeastern United States. Of particular concern is its rapid expansion, naturalization, and formation of monocultures in Texas coastal prairie, one of the most imperiled temperate ecoregions in North America. The objective of this research was to examine how deeproot sedge r...

Use of Prescribed Fire to Reduce Wildfire Potential1

Fires were a part of our wildlands prehistorically. Prescribed burning reduces fire hazard and potential fire behavior primarily by reducing fuel quantity and continuity. Fuel continuity should be considered on the micro scale within stands, the midscale among, and the macro-scale among watersheds or entire forests. Prescribed fire is only one of the tools which can be used to reduce fire hazar...
